the mechanical-biological waste treatment plant (MBT) in Ljubljana, Slovenia – one of the most advanced and largest plants of its type in Europe. The ceremonial opening by the Slovenian Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning, Mrs. Irena Majcen, the Deputy Head at European Commission, Mr. Christos Gogos, the governing mayor of the Slovenian capital, Mr. Zoran Janković, as well as the managing director of the client Snaga javno podjetje d.o.o., Mr. Janko Kramžar, was attended by numerous guests. A consortium consisting of STRABAG Umwelttechnik GmbH, Plant Engineering and Construction Dresden, and the Austrian STRABAG AG has designed and turnkey delivered the currently largest infrastructure project of Slovenia on the basis of their own technologies and processes. STRABAG, as main contractor, delivered the entire range of process technology and was responsible together with STRABAG d.o.o. from Ljubljana for the whole construction work. Despite delays in the approval procedure and consequently a later start of work, all agreed deadlines of the € 112 million project were finally able to be met thanks to the shortened construction period of 16 months. In adherence to time and budget, the plant playing a significant role within the Slovenian waste treatment has started its trial operation on November 3, 2015 which might take up to 15 months. This plant is able to treat 171.000 tons/p.a. of household waste, industrial and bulky waste as well as separately collected bio-waste from Ljubljana and associated Slovenian municipalities. As waste management centre, the MBT integrates a fully automatic sorting of recyclables, produces solid recovered fuels destined for external energy recovery, and generates power and heat on site by a digestion/biogas plant using STRABAG’s own and patented LARAN®-process. STRABAG is also responsible for the current trial operation at the waste management centre. The specially employed qualified personnel is trained by STRABAG on site and will be transferred to Snaga after taking over of the plant.
